Research

Faculty members of the Division of Geriatrics and Nutritional Science perform cutting edge basic and clinical research and receive grant support from the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the Longer Life Foundation and the International Life Sciences Institute. Projects range from studies of hormone replacement in older adults to low calorie diets for the overweight, andfrom the efficacy of hip pads in preventing fractures to the use of ginseng in controlling glucose metabolism. Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center — The Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) at Washington University is a federally funded program that coordinates and supports the work of established investigators and teachers from diverse backgrounds in many departments and divisions of the University.

Applied Physiology — The Division has resources supporting research and training in applied physiology. Research focuses on the prevention of physical frailty and functional decline with age. Projects include the study of hormones, nutrition and exercise in older men and women. Resources include an exercise facility and testing equipment.

Clinical Nutrition Research Unit — The Clinical Nutrition Research Unit (CNRU) at Washington University supports basic science and clinical investigation that involves the "Regulation of Nutrient Metabolism and Function in Health and Disease."

Volunteer for Health — Volunteers may enroll as potential research subjects for clinical studies. The Volunteer for Health web site includes a list of current clinical studies being performed by Washington University physicians.
