clinic located at the Memory Diagnostic Center in the Health Key building
on the Washington University Medical Center Campus affiliated with Barnes-Jewish
Hospital. This clinic serves the adult in the community who may have difficulty
with memory loss that could be attributed to aging, depression, and/or
dementia. He also has a primary care practice of patients at Parc Provence,
a state-of-the-art dementia care facility, located in West St. Louis County.
He is also medical director of Parc Provence and oversees medical care
for the entire facility, while assisting on total quality assurance projects
and administrative issues. Dr. Carr is Medical Director of The Rehabilitation
Institute of St. Louis (TRISL) and has assisted in developing a driving
evaluation center at this site. Carr has a passion for teaching, and is
the geriatric fellowship director and coordinator for the internal medicine
residency geriatric rotation that participates in the education of older
adult medicine for physician trainees. He is a lecturer in educational
settings for physician trainees and the community. His favorite topics
include successful aging, medical conditions and driving, Alzheimer's
Disease, and polypharmacy. Dr. David Carr is very active in research on older adult
drivers and drivers with medical illness. He participates in a St. Louis
consortium of clinicians and researchers that have interest in older drivers.
Collaborators include Dr. Thomas Meuser from UMSL, Dr. Marla-Berg Weger
from SLU, Ms. Peggy Barco WUSM, Steven Ice from Independent Drivers, Inc,
and Ms. Pat Niewoehner from the VA in Jefferson Barracks. Together, this
group has had initial success with funding efforts from the AAA Foundation
to study medical fitness-to-drive, the Missouri Department of Transportation
to study dementia and driving, and the LongerLife Foundation to study
stroke and medical fitness-to-drive. A driving evaluation clinic was initiated
with collaboration from the Program of Occupational Therapy in the WU
School of Medicine and HealthSouth, and operates at The Rehabilitation
Institute of St. Louis. Future efforts will include developing a consortium
of Occupational Therapists that specialize in driving assessments in the
State of Missouri, exploring issues of loss of mobility in spinal cord
injuries and frailty, and intervention trials to improve driving skills. Contact Information Washington University School of Medicine Publications Dobbs B, Carr DB, Morris JC.
