caring for older adults, with a particular interest in the treatment and
prevention of osteoporosis and the management of hormone deficiencies
in men and postmenopausal women. Birge has a special clinic where these
conditions are evaluated and treatment is provided. In addition, Birge

Hospital and is an active participant in the training of health professionals
at Washington University School of Medicine. Research Interests Dr. Birge's research interests include the role of nutrition
and hormones, particularly estrogen, in the aging of the brain and the
development of Alzheimer's disease. This interest has lead to the investigation
of strategies to prevent hip fracture, including the evaluation of hip
pads to prevent injurious falls and hip fracture in nursing homes. His
interest in the aging brain has lead to studies developing more effective
screening tests for the early diagnosis of dementia. His research has
led to the publication of over 90 articles and reviews and contributions
to numerous textbooks of medicine. He is a consultant to the National
Institutes of Health and the American Board of Internal Medicine. Washington University School of Medicine Publications Recent Articles in Peer Review Journals Birge SJ, McEwen BS, Wise PM. Estrogen
